Magdalene College Cambridge visit
On the 25th of January, a selection of Year 11 students visited Savio Salesian College to attend a session aimed at encouraging more young able people from our area to apply to some of the best universities in the country.
The inspirational session was run by Sandy Mill, the schools liaison officer for Magdalene College in Cambridge University. We discussed the benefits of university and the opportunities opened up by going to such a prestigious one as Cambridge. Sandy discussed with us the common stereotype’s within such a University such as needing to be rich to attend or have been to private school. However, he showed us that as long as you have a passion for your chosen subject and the grades to support you, there is nothing holding you back from attending one of those top Universities.
Cambridge University has more than 18,000 students from all walks of life and all corners of the world, all with one common interest; a thirst for learning and knowledge. Sandy spoke to us about the thirty one colleges in Cambridge, each with students living together who study completely different courses. This structure creates a buzz for learning and allows people to socialise with many people all with differing interests and passions. The students who attended the session also learned about the timetable of a university student, of which consists of one hour each week when you have a one to one study session with a specialised academic, something very unique to other universities. Many students who attended asked questions at the end of the motivational session and were keen to get to know more about the University.
